Considered by The Guardian the best romantic film ever. Brief Encounter (1945) is one of director David Lean’s many masterpieces. The film tells the story of two married people. Doctor ( Trevor Howard ) and a housewife ( Celia Johnson ), meet several times at the Brighton station bar and get along. They fall in love and would continue the relationship. If circumstances and a sense of duty didn’t persuade them to end the relationship.
Romantic, not cheesy, indeed realistic, and very current in addressing a theme. In an era that certainly did not face certain taboos: extramarital affairs. And it does so, in addition to a film noir setting, with the music of the composer. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) is one of the most romantic films ever. Between comedy and drama, it is also one of the most famous in the history of cinema. Directed by Blake Edwards and starring an iconic Audrey Hepburn, the film tells of the love between Holly Golightly (Hepburn), an apparently sophisticated girl from high society, and Paul Varjak (George Peppard), a writer who lives in the same Holly’s mansion. However, the story between the two is disturbed by the turbulent life of the girl, whose sentimental affairs made up of gangsters and ex-husbands inevitably involve Paul.
How can we forget Audrey Hepburn singing “Moon River” on the windowsill? Or of her walking around in a little black dress and sunglasses and admiring the Tiffany window? Or the beautiful kiss in the rain between Paul and Holly, where her cat also appears between the two? In short, Breakfast at Tiffany ‘s is a timeless classic and also a romantic film to be seen absolutely.
Les Parapluies de Cherbourg
(1970)
The film, entirely sung, shows its qualities above all based on the excellent balance of the composition. The choice of colors, the freshness of the musical motifs, and the lyricism with which the director is able to transfigure everyday characters and events. No spoken dialogue, only sung, for the film directed by Jacques Demy and winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
A simple, tender, and melancholy realistic tale developed in three parts. The love story between Geneviève (a young and already wonderful Catherine Deneuve), daughter of a widowed umbrella seller in financial trouble (Anne Verdon), and Guy (the most surprising interpretation by Nino Castelnuovo), a mechanic who grew up with an old aunt, soon interrupted because he goes to the army in Algeria (The departure); she discovers she is pregnant and in the end marries a diamond specialist chosen by her mother. While always thinking of her beloved in the army (The Absence); five years later, they meet again. The film has admittedly inspired Damien Chazelle in making La La Land.
