Lately, many German family movies were made after children’s books. Probably the most famous one is The School for Magical Animals which is already in its third part this year. But also back then, Max and the Wild 7 found its followers; in 2020 around 180,000 people went to see it. And so now, almost four years later there is a sequel: The Ghost Grandma. That’s quite a long time for a second part especially when it comes to kids. So they changed the whole young ensemble around. Max’ opponent Ole and Max himself are now played by other young actors than before same as Laura, his classmate who this time is portrayed by Klara Nölle.
The three old people have stayed the same probably the most important thing for many of them; because they bring along a lot of personality. Especially Vera with her former actor star nostalgia celebrates her very own kind of weirdness -which may not be super subtle either, but lets not talk about any kind of development here as well. Max and the Wild 7: The Ghost Grandma takes caricatures seriously and expects everything to fit in. Therefore the children become all more every-dayish. Which means: They’re also getting more boring. Of course it does create an area of identification when the protagonist doubts himself and gets bullied by one of his classmates, since these are experiences that can be related to by the young audience themselves but he’s also pretty interchangeable.
The more entertaining thread is the one about the alleged ghost causing chaos at the retirement home obviously he doesn’t exist really nice! But what’s behind it all? For this, like last time too, also in this film again some characters have to show their detective skills. But don’t expect too much here; as expected from a children’s story it’s less complex than entries from grown-up genres. What makes Max and the Wild 7: The Ghost Grandma different from many other children’s films are the light-crime and adventure elements that Winfried Oelsner and Lisa-Marie Dickreiter added to the original.
While the football thread both in terms of content as well as implementation- is less interesting. The matches aren’t exactly thrilling. At least the end is different than one might expect here Oelsner and Dickreiter, who also wrote the screenplay, try to break with film conventions. Together with a humorous touch and an atmospheric castle setting Max and the Wild 7: The Ghost Grandma has enough so you could still go for a trip to the cinema at least fun can have it’s limitations on young target group. If there was to be a third part, one would probably want to wait not quite so long again.
