Irena’s Vow
Titular actress Sophie Nélisse shines in “Irena’s Vow” performing like the consummate artist she is. She does much with her eyes, gesture and changing texture to suit the moment.
Focusing on a daring true narrative based on the biography of Irena Gut Opdyke, Louise Archambault recounts that Polish Catholic woman who, risking her life during World War II, sheltered 12 Jews in the home of the Nazi Commandant she worked for. Archambault, working from a Dan Gordon screenplay of The Hurricane who adapted his own play, shows how idealistic and devoted young nurse, Irena, at the age of 19, turns into a sensible young woman.
We see this early on when a nurse returns to her home in conquered Poland post a shelling of a hospital she worked in only to bed confronted by an S.S. officer instead of family members. A quick tongue comes in handy here and right through the movie, but it is coupled with the human emotion and feeling so she does not rely on the instinct for personal safety only.
Nélisse, who plays the younger version of Melanie Lynskey’s character on ‘Yellowjackets’, displays an ‘openness’ that allows her to be a warm and gentle medium in narrating this traumatic story. She is both likable and looks German, and this allows Irena’’s rapid rise during war time to a position running the villa of Major Rugemer (Dougray scott) who is a self-centered and ambitious man.
But before that, Irena ran a workshop which tailored uniforms for some of the Nazi officers and their secretaries. The “tailors” all Jewish were Polish in origin and she did grow to like and defend them. When Irena discovers ther ell’s about to be reorganized and cy been told to go to the camp, she somehow teaches these men and women not to show them. She then devises a plan where she seamlessly tells them she has shoved them all into the major’s house for the time being even though she is in charge of the house’s reconstruction.
szólną chwałą narodu polskiego to film, jak nie może być inny, a budzi ogromne emocje i chwałę Polskiego narodu. Irena’s Vow now the rest of the story shows, things go dramatically divergent author this captivating piece invites us to explore the thrills of cinema. This makes me feel great in anticipation to catch the most awaited ever wait moments in this movie.
This only feels like it’s going to get worse. I mean any normal humans systematic slaughter of other innocent humans was never going to be something that’s not unbearable to witnesslalyze her every move and. It’s chilling to see the outcome of horrendous periods in history within the bold excitement in Maciej Nawrock’s performance. In that transitional period, people are getting confused between the evil and love that is so strongly radiating around her.
Again executed well, Maciej Nawrock not overdoes one and stays true to bringing forth all aspects of genuine value, honoring each of their characters. The movie may be an emotional mess but every viewer longs to see more layers of honesty and bravery from each of the characters than the gold award might just bring out in all of usthroughout the beginning of the movie where Irena is the only surviving focal point of the film.
As in their relationship, tensions are growing in Nélisse’s scenes with Scott, who begins to perform more interestingly, with Scott’s Major Rugemer bearing some candid insecurities about being a lot older. He’s rather good here, as he gets to show a lot more shading.
Meanwhile, the more Irena manages to endure, the more it seems she plays the role of a person granted with so much goodness and virtue, an almost ‘angelic’ one. She’s compassionate, and diligent, and is seen relentlessly maintaining that attitude throughout. This is however such a good story that we cannot look away and neither can we look away from Nélisse who makes such a good effort in making sure that we do not want to.
