Hell Hole
Adams Family is a family of filmmakers made up of the father John Adams, mother Toby Poser and daughter Lulu Adams. Hurry up to a streaming platform and check out “The Deeper You Dig” as it has been rated as one of the horror films of the decade. There are also these inventive and goofy “Hellbender,” disgusting genre television films. Given the environment and these family’s videos, these films are extremely personal B genre. Their last one is a different story for John and Toby…Lulu receives screenwriter credit but is not present this time because it is one of the few shot outside the US (Serbia) and definitely the most expensive. Having larger scope means that onegets to work with a bigger production company but insufficient time spent filming within their characteristic style places some flaws into “Hell Hole.” In relation, it’s the other end of the scale in terms of disappointment, even though it contains so many elements and is still a fine viewing experience that any fan of horror will simply appreciate.
It’s safe to say Hell Hole borrows a lot from Carpenter, especially the stranded base amidst a killer that can shape shift as the average man themes found in The Thing and those in films of Carpenter wandering around portals to hell as in ‘Prince of Darkness’ and ‘In The Mouth Of Madness’. The unfortunate individuals in this particular one are a crew (Emily in Poser’s fight against the elements) that’s involved in some fracking in the middle of nowhere in Serbia when they come across chance of a lifetime, or quite the opposite depending on the perspective. They witness the death of a loosely held inside the protective shell body of a centuries old soldier still alive, and the future torturer. As they contemplate what’s going on, their attention is attracted by the Frenchman and his auricle which seems to house something spheroidal in shape that gets featured for brief moments. With one scream of ‘for god’s sake kill it with fire’, Adams (John) was already being possessed by the creature controlling that tortured man and was getting deeper into chaos.
The twist here is how the body possession story is told. This is sort of a male pregnancy story in that the creature is growing inside men. This raises several questions. Where’s mom? And what does it come out like? In their most weird ideas, the Adams Family has a lot of fun, like when a creature inside a human host runs away so violently that it leaves a splattered pile of blood and gory mass. Hell Hole is a wonderfully goopy movie; there is loads of blood, and goop, and red tentacles whipping about everywhere. The movie, however, never fails to make you laugh; it actually feels more like a dark comedy, in a strange way, unlike other films the family has produced in the past that tend to be more grim.
In that regard, I am pleased to watch Adams and Poser seem to expand their creativity and try something new here, but it is difficult to shrug off the impression that this one has not got the teeth of some of their finest films. It is more of a ‘what the heck’ type of a film. Sure there are some remarks about sufficiently screwing around with Mother Nature will bring havoc, but it is very thinly flaunted, and the heroes have too few characteristics to be effectively memorable. And yes, there is little wit in the fact that Emily was a hippie, and Olivera Perunicic does some good work in terms of character, but here the people are quite inevitably forced to lose focus on the character of the enemy they have to confront which in the end provides a certain degree of depth which even great events of body horror do not escape. It’s intermittently entertaining enough, but just not that good a bastardized film.
