Geo-Disaster
Right from the opening scenes, Geo Disaster starts with the science part, where black material appears to be going straight through Earth- in through one side and out the other. As if to say, the world has decided to go haywire and is now destabilizing itself by filling the gap with lava and various other issues while leaving a large crater behind.
This is very disappointing for us as a family of five. Dad and son are away together in some bonding camping and now share a certain burden of finding their way back to the city so as to come to the aid of our sisters who are “the girls” having a good time trying to get as wet as possible. Fortunately, the new step mom keeps herself quite busy throughout the film for about 83 minutes as she seems somehow engrossed in unpacking one new skill after the other to see that everyone does not die.
Along the way, we find the family deciding to come together despite the odds and they acquire some new mates along the journey. Most cast members in this film provided a refreshing change of pace. Instead of getting nuts, the majority has a mindset on teamwork so that you can all survive in the end. While trading off a name of Geo-storm, the plot closely resembles 2012 and Deep Impact because the primary plot points are about how to survive an earthquake and afterwards getting onto higher grounds to avoid the tsunami.
Geo Disaster is largely centered around family. In order to justify their appearance and set the stage for the next disaster, we are introduced to three of the most superfluous scientists I’ve seen in a long time dedicated to film, all tied to a dark room. Reduced to screaming at a screen and dryly slinging about black humor over global destruction, their contribution seems to be simply padding the script as evidenced by their parting scene where one of the scientists bemoans to the others “what have we learnt from this exercise?” and the answer comes back “it was bad!” Um thanks for that!
With the exception of some audio production hiccups and pathetic and desperate attempts at padding, Geo Disaster does manage to entertain in an over the top fashion whenever the need arises. Certainly, not The Asylum’s best but at the same time, far from being its worst.
