What would you say about Denis Villeneuve‘s film … without words? The director of “Dune: Part Two” revealed that he is not a fan of dialogues and believes that television has infected cinema with them. The creator also defended the long lengths of his films.

Denis Villeneuve dreams of a film without dialogues

Honestly, I hate dialogues , said Denis Villeneuve in an interview for The Times of London. Dialogues are for theater and television. I don’t remember movies for their good lines of dialogue, but for their strong images. I’m not interested in dialogue at all. Pure image and sound – this is the strength of cinema. But it’s not that obvious, judging by the movies we see today. Cinema has been polluted by television.

Asked if it was because television had its “golden age” and film producers decided to replicate this success, the director replied: Exactly.

In an ideal world, I would make an engaging film that doesn’t feel experimental, but without saying a single word in it , the creator added. People would leave the cinema and say: “wait, there was no dialogue?“, but they wouldn’t feel the lack of it.

Interestingly, Villeneuve planned to make a series based on The Son by (Nesbø novel). The project was to be created for HBO and the star was to be Jake Gyllenhaal. However, the director recently admitted that the project will not be created despite a great script, because it is “too far” from his original sensibility.
