Double Duty

Double Duty

Lesseos has spent the last two decades serving in the Marines and when she steps out of uniform, her name is now MJ. Adapting to civilian life, however, is a different issue altogether. Old college classmate Sophie Duerden invites her to dinner and introduces her to designer Craig Sizemore, who is “a little more feminine” than MJ.

Meanwhile, Sophie’s working on a charity auction but is unaware that her assistant, Carl Freeman, intends to hijack a Faberge egg that is meant as a top bid item. However, MJ has undergone hypnosis and now ‘touches’ her inner female. There are two problems: one, whenever a finger snaps, she changes her state, and two, the change is from a tough, rough, screaming marine to a petite and gentle lady who fears breaking a nail. What happens when push comes to shove?

It has to be said, however, the above flaw is not with the characters, and the actors who has performed them.

The idea of a marine transitioning back into everyday life is more than enough to carry a film, which is also a refreshing thing to see, as Lesseos is convincing as a soldier unlike many actresses one may think of Mena Suvari from the Day of the Dead remake comes to mind. Still looks pretty good, given she’s.

Let’s just say, I was surprised. Sizemore is against type lead actor of Black Hawk Down and Saving Private Ryan who is always depicting some sort of military character but this does not change the fact that he is amazing nonetheless. Nonetheless, nearly the whole film is appreciably aided by Karen Black’s performance as the adviser who is called to assist MJ in her transformation into a lady this scene comes with a My Fair Lady gag about which I must admit I did chuckle.

This is the undoing of the film as the rest of it is a total disappointment. Let us put it this way, Lesseos in feminine mode is simply less humorous, and let’s just say it dross negative humour when luckily the scene is not enjoyed. As for the script, one such weak moment is where MJ gets challenged on the ground by a drunken biker-chick and I thought to myself, oh god, doesn’t anybody on the sets want to shoot this.

However, that does not come quite up to that low point, but the level of graphic violence seen is the type where a person only gets shot in the arm and of all things, there are three such incidents within twenty seconds at the peak of the climax scene. Unfortunately, the number of times the heroine avenges a stylistic injustice is quite small and my impression was that Lassoes should have more respect and focus on the content than on average purposes.
