Psychological thrillers are often the scariest movies because they tap into something inside us. Disremembered is no exception. This character-driven exploration of the mind delves deep into the past and present of one girl’s traumatic life, and the actions that lead to agony and isolation around her. So let’s take a look at Disremembered and what sets it apart.
Disremembered is an independent horror feature from 2024 written by Steve Hermann (Desperate Souls 2023) and Zackary Ayers (in his feature debut), with direction by Hermann and Angel Nichole Bradford (Depravity 2023). It stars Bradford as Samantha and Morrigan Thompson Milam (XXX-Mas 2023) as Becca. This psychological thriller cuts between black-and-white past events and color present moments as we watch Samantha come undone in her mind.
Bradford and Milam have acted together before, so their chemistry carries some of the longer exposition scenes. Bradford also gets to show off a lot here, as she embodies her restless mind physically very well. The plot itself is incredibly tight, every beat of emotion feeling earned, every bit of suffering inflicted upon these characters wrung with empathy for their pain. That being said, this movie isn’t for everyone; there should probably be several trigger warnings on display so as not to stress out trauma survivors unnecessarily.
The team behind Disremembered should be commended for taking on such heavy subjects that most others shy away from putting up on screen. There are a couple moments where even the most hardened horror fan might have to look away. Sometimes the dialogue is a little spoon-fed or the syntax not quite perfect, but Milam takes viewers on a survival journey they will feel in their bones.
Disremembered feels like Single White Female meets Imaginary (read our review here), with an ending twist that subverts expectations in all the best ways. Definitely one to check out for those who can handle sexual and physical abuse as subject matter.
