DC Extended Universe

DC Extended Universe is world of films, series and video games based on the comic book universe of the DC Comics publishing company. It includes both stand-alone productions inspired by subsequent DC titles and longer, multi-episode film, television and game series based on the company’s comic books. The most famous representatives of the universe are the popular superheroes: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Teams: Justice League and Teen Titans, and villains: Joker, Lex Luthor, Darkseid and Deathstroke.

The foundations of the DC Universe were laid in the late 1930s and early 1940s when Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman made their comic book debuts. With time, the characters began to join each other in common adventures. The action of subsequent stories with their participation takes place in fictional locations (Gotham, Metropolis, Coast City), planets (Krypton, Oa), or alternative dimensions.

The characters from DC Comics have made their way to the big and small screen on numerous occasions. For example, Superman appeared in the early 1940s in a series of short animations produced by Fleischer Studios. The 1960s saw the success of the “Batman” series (1966-1968) with Adam West, “Superman” (1978) with Christopher Reeve, in the ’80s – “Batman” (1989) by Tim Burton, and in the 2000s – Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, especially “The Dark Knight” (2008). The first attempts to create a “cinematic” DC universe were made in animation, introducing plot continuity between the series, among which were “Batman” (1992), “Superman” (1996), “Justice League” (2001) or “Batman – 20 Years Later” (1999). In the second decade of the 21st century, Warner Bros. studio began building the so-called DC Extended Universe (DCEU), a full-fledged cinematic universe including such films as “Man of Steel” (2013), “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016), “Wonder Woman” (2017) and “Justice League” (2017).

The DC universe, however, remains complex and heterogeneous, continuing to produce feature films (“Joker”) and animated films (“All-Star Superman”) as well as video games (“Batman: Arkham Asylum”) that retain plot sovereignty or create alternate story sequences parallel to the stories told within the flagship universes – whether comic book or cinematic.
