Dark Amazon
As research for a new documentary a couple, Mina and Ben, travel to Brazil where some locals claim to know the cure for cancer. However this is not their primary objective since they are constantly met with resistance from the natives who feel the foreign presence has disrupted their deity Ayanga.
Was this phantom to blame for the unsuccessful first lot of research or are the perpetrators sitting right under the noses? It began with their research being vandalized but when the team members start disappearing and dying, the already reduced team members’ focus shifts towards survival.
The movie was in most parts filmed in Brazil. Most of the movie is shot in a ‘found footage’ style with a ‘The film you are about to see was pieced together from actual footage’ caption, and with dark night vision images in the beginning. To be quite honest, it is done pretty well with great acting from all casts including Robert Fleet (Player/J.Edgar) who portrays John, the first person who discovers the cure.
It takes a long time for the action to pick up. From the very beginning, there are strange supernatural glitches in the recordings; a deep growl or an unusual chirpy whistle, but there is a waiting period before the story becomes engaging. The special effects are decent enough but the usual cliff shot impractical camera work is commonplace along with the obscured night shots, most of the kills remain off the screen or in shadows.
For a found footage movie, this was surprisingly decent. The BLAIR WITCH PROJECT can be used to compare this film and many others and though it is certainly not as successful in the supernatural angle or in hitting the scares, the creepiness factor is very well done and does unfortunately brush over the end when the plot is set to thicken.
The soundtrack is almost absent with Anthony Espina being responsible for writing the only major song. If it was somehow recommended to you it is advisable that you watch it but do not put much hope in it the acting is its best feature.
