In a moment the world can change, destiny can be rewritten, and lives can be forever altered. Blink is a movie that revolves around this concept, in which blinking acts as a symbol of unpredictable twists of fate. Srinidhi Bengaluru, the director who has a background in theatre, drew inspiration from the Greek play Oedipus Rex translated into Kannada by P Lankesh as Dore Oedipus and a couple of time travel stories. It is an adrenaline pumping sci-fi thriller combining time travel theories set between 1996 – 2001 – 2021 – 2035 etc., where each blink has the power to change destinies.
Based in present-day Bengaluru, the film follows Apoorva (Deekshith Shetty), a 24-year-old theatre artist working backstage haunted by his own secrets and dreams; he hides his academic failures from his mother back at their village while juggling two different lives finding comfort and love with Swapna (Mandara Battalahalli). But everything takes an unexpected turn when Apoorva realizes that he possess an extraordinary ability which is hidden inside him – he can control blinking.
While investigating more about this newfound skill of his, Apoorva comes face to face with an old man who reveals shocking truths about what happened to his father but before he could understand its magnitude or ask any further questions, The stranger vanishes leaving behind only unanswered riddles for Apoorva Soon after being chased by himself from another timeline along with this mysterious elderly gentleman who seems have different motives altogether.
Between reality and illusion lines start getting blurred as our protagonist embarks on uncovering mysteries surrounding oneself leading us through knots upon knots until we reach endgame where even fabric of time itself gets tested by Blink’s relentless pace combined with mind flips rounding off on proverbial ‘edge of seat’ moments for viewers all over again.
Bengaluru’s story as a filmmaker has been one that testifies for his rule-breaking and cinema boundary pushing ambition. It is evident in Blink, how much the director wants to challenge normality in film making by going far beyond what is conventionally expected of debut films. Srinidhi brings out this side of him through different sources such as contemporary theater among others which clearly shows diversity within skills possessed.
Meanwhile, amongst ensemble casts Deekshith Shetty takes up considerable amount screen space time while still giving room other actors too so they could shine their importance on narrative delivery adding depth where necessary but leaving audience craving more from them later. He seems have deeply understood complexity behind each character perhaps because theatre allowed him flex extensively into various roles thus bringing with it versatility; whether dealing mysteries brought about when time-traveling or trying figuring out who one really is not only does he bring naturalness but also authenticity thereby keeping people glued throughout whole movie.
Apart from Deekshith Shetty, Blink also boasts a strong supporting cast with names like Gopalkrishna Deshpande and Chaithra J Achar playing vital roles within the storyline itself however even though these two give good performances that help add layers onto plot development still leave viewers wanting more screen-time presence than what was provided for during runtime.
What separates Blink from other sci-fi thrillers is how it seamlessly combines different technical aspects. Prasanna Kumar MS’ traditional folk music, Avinasha Shastri’s vibrant visuals and Sanjeev Jagirdar’s editing all come together beautifully to create this unique movie. With every emotion that Apoorva goes through, there is a different tune played alongside it – the soundtrack acts as an anthem for those things in life which are common among us all, love, loss and redemption.
But Blink does much more than just transcend being another one of many exciting science fiction stories, it’s also a thought provoking picture that will leave you wondering what could possibly happen next. Srinidhi Bengaluru has directed such an incredible film with their daring narrative choices here we can’t wait to see where this filmmaker takes us next!
