Suspiria
Luca Guadagnino (2018)
Produced by Amazon Prime itself, Luca Guadagnino ‘s Suspiria is the remake/homage to the 1977 film of the same name directed by Dario Argento. The Italian director recovers part of the plot, characters, and subject while transforming the atmosphere, the settings, and the final message. Unlike the original film which featured a raw story of witches with an almost impressionist photography, Guadagnino brings a much more refined and elegant style, with a deeper insight into the crisis of a world and the need for change within it.
The mostly female cast boasts names such as lead Dakota Johnson and supporting characters Tilda Swinton (who plays three roles), Chloë Grace Moretz, Mia Goth, and Jessica Harper. For the soundtrack, as for the previous film, another Radiohead member takes the reins: Thom Yorke. This film will be able to scare, amaze and shock at the same time. It does not aim to act as a remake of Argento’s film, but as a tribute produced by a big fan of the original film.
Goodnight Mommy
Matt Sobel (2022)
Goodnight Mommy is certainly a very interesting title, to be included among the Amazon Prime movies to see. The film revolves around two twins, Lukas and Elias (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti), who arrive at their mother’s country house, played by Naomi Watts, and find her face covered in bandages due to cosmetic surgery. . As soon as they arrive, they immediately understand that something is wrong. She imposes new house rules on them, smokes in the bathroom, and sneaks up on a drawing that the children have given her, all of which she normally would never do. As her behavior grows stranger, a disturbing thought creeps into the boys: the woman they haven’t yet seen in her face may not be their mother.
This version of Goodnight Mommy – originally an intriguing 2014 film by Austrians Veronica Franz and Severin Fiala – takes up the basic elements of the original, namely the primal fear that the people we know and love have somehow been “replaced”.
The Fourth Estate
Orson Welles (1941)
In the list of the best films to see on Amazon Prime Video, what is considered by many to be the best film ever, Citizen Kane, the first feature film by American director Orson Welles, can not be missing. Shot at the age of only twenty-five, it is loosely based on the biography of the wood industry and publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst. The film tells the life of the press tycoon Charles Foster Kane (played by Welles himself), who is unable to love if not “only on his terms”, with the consequence of creating a void around him and remaining alone inside his gigantic residence (Xanadu, in the Italian version, Candalù), where he dies abandoned by everyone.
Welles, using a sequence of flashbacks (six, including the newsreel), shows the fragments of the tycoon’s life as if they were the pieces of a gigantic puzzle (a puzzle that metaphorically appears several times in the film). The viewer is left with the task of reconstructing, in all its complexity, the personality of Charles Foster Kane. A unique and unrepeatable masterpiece capable of revolutionizing the history of cinema in terms of content and technique French director Francoise Truffaut will say: I belong to a generation of filmmakers who have decided to make films having seen The Fourth Estate.”
Vanquish
Michelangelo Antonioni (1953)
The second film by the Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni, I Vinti, was released in theaters in 1953. The film is divided into three episodes: French, Italian, and English. The plot is taken from news events that existed: some young people are the protagonists of thefts and murders. From here, Antonioni develops the three episodes thoroughly and crudely, so much so that at the release the film was heavily censored for its murder scenes.
Although it is not one of the most famous films of the Italian director, the film deserves a vision as, although premature, it has many of the themes that Antonioni will explore better in his subsequent films. The film was presented at the eighteenth edition of the Venice Film Festival and boasts the collaboration as assistant director of a young Francesco Rosi, at the dawn of his film career.
