American Justice
Many people are aware of the name Huey Newton, but when some are asked, they are unable to explain to others the reason why. The co founder of Black Panther Party managed to turn many heads in 1967 when he was shot during a brief encounter with a cop.
The Black Panthers were able to get one of their cofounders into legal trouble and sought the help of Charles R. Garry, a lawyer who’s already been in the center of quite a few controversies. According to them, it was recognized from the beginning that this trial would be a political one since the events, which led to the Newton’s trial, can be described as a product of political and racial policing.
This was made more obvious when they mooted the breath-taking charges: first degree murder, aggravated burglary, and kidnapping. All that for protecting himself after being shot during a botched traffic stop. The movie features the Black Panthers and significant figures in the American judiciary who all played a prominent role in the country’s violent history. Both foster and idealist ideas about black revolutionaries in America are asked by American justice on trial and still ask today: Has America ever been a place for the fair trial of a black revolutionary?
American Justice on Trial is seamlessly integrated into the course material at the college level owing to the forty minutes cut. The video covers the history of the black revolutionaries from the colonial period followed by the black panthers. American systemic racism should be a primary focus for any student who is to study the events that lead to Huey Newton’s trial and its impact on American society.
Most of the interviews are frank and surprisingly detailed, hence American Justice on Trial may be aptly described as both instructive and entertaining. Police brutality, the state of the justice system and the social movements of the 1960s will find this title particularly interesting. For those who own a collection of racial justice and law documentaries, American Justice on Trial is a great addition to it. Very highly recommended.
