Alienoid: The Return to the Future (2024)

Alienoid-The-Return-to-the-Future

If you love strange, time hopping adventures that blend fantasy, science fiction, action and comedy then you need to know about the Alienoid duology. The first film is called Alienoid and it’s an absolute riot that mixes all four of those genres in pretty much the best way possible but it doesn’t finish there. It has a cliffhanger ending that just screams for a sequel, so when I got the opportunity to review Alienoid Return to the Future I pounced on it without any hesitation at all. I couldn’t wait to see how this movie was going to wrap things up, and now that I’ve seen it I can happily say that it does not disappoint.

Alienoid: Return to the Future was written and directed by Choi Dong-hoon, and stars Ryu Jun-yeol, Kim Tae-ri, Kim Woo-bin, Lee Hanee, Yum Jung-ah and Jo Woo-jin. As expected, it picks up right where Alienoid left off Ean (Kim Tae-ri), a young woman who has come into possession of an alien artifact known as the Divine Blade which allows her to travel through time (with some assistance from mystical sorcerers and sci-fi tech) is now forced to go back to her own era in order stop a group of evil extraterrestrials from terraforming Earth and wiping out humanity in the process.

Before we dive into my thoughts on Alienoid Return to the Future though there’s one question I want to answer most of you probably have regarding this film, Can you watch this movie if you haven’t seen the original Alienoid? Yes and no. On one hand yes because this sequel does start with a brief recap of what happened previously so you won’t be too lost; however on other hand should if possible watch Alienoid beforehand trust me.

See what does great job with its characters makes you fall in love them but also sets up world for sh*t hit fan, whereas this one struggles bit with that aspect. Return to the Future wants be accessible newcomers but at same time kind assumes know these people already.

Before things go wrong gives us plenty opportunity get know these folks don’t really here. In fact first 45 minutes or so is basically nothing but action without character development narrative progression, therefore if do not care about who these individuals are then may well find yourself disliking rest film because it’s just more what didn’t like begin.

And be honest even if already smitten with this universe still have slog through chunk of Return to the Future. Like said, there’s no meat behind any those bones, so while fun see them again after while novelty wears off quickly.

I needed slow down give chance live up their potential as well further plot along fortunately does around 45 minute mark. It’s almost writer/director Choi Dong-hoon suddenly remembered had story tell once he does that everything becomes smooth sailing from there on out.

The film only becomes the very fun roller coaster ride that the initial Alienoid was once it undertakes more narrative intention. This is again an almost perfect combination of aliens, sci-fi tech, and good old-fashioned magic; so if that sounds like a good time to you, then I can practically assure you that this movie will rock your socks off.

Moreover, the characters in this section of Alienoid Return to the Future really stand out too. With the best of them, these four protagonists Ean, Muruk and the two sorcerers can charm your socks off. Everything about these heroes is just right for this kind of dumb-fun movie from writing to performances to costumes. Hence they’re a total delight to watch.

I would be lying if humor’s aspect is not brought into light here too. Sometimes its comedy and action are intertwined nearly flawlessly by it and when it goes all-out for a joke, it hardly ever misses. For instance there’s a scene towards the end where some characters from past travel into present; these fish outta water totally hilarious meet treadmills first time around. It’s true not every single one liner works as well but on average this ranks up there with most bizarre comedies I’ve seen lately.

Last but not least let me talk about unexpected plot twists in Alienoid Return To The Future for few moments here please? In first movie evil aliens’ ringleader is revealed at finale but that’s just scratching surface my friends. So if you think know how story is going play out trust me when say won’t see coming because it takes lot turns along way before reaching destination.

Sure you could probably guess general idea behind where everything leads ultimately but as they say devil lies within details doesn’t it? And boy oh boy let me tell ya some them are freaking huge! My jaw dropped couple times during watching this piece only reason why yours didn’t do same was because yours isn’t real (haha) but I’m telling those shocking twists will keep almost anyone on edge their seats. So as far as concerned despite its many faults still managed have good time watching Alienoid: Return To The Future. True first 45 minutes or so weren’t great however at two hours long this film makes up weak opening and then some. Once it hits stride becomes one of funnest movies year has offer not let off pedal until credits roll.
