40 Days And 40 Nights
In a parallel universe, another 40 Days and 40 Nights will switch on this neglected need. The germ the sperm, dare I say is here, of a cinematic shoot which is really hot; is very funny and very smart; has a serious take on the sad and tenacious intersections of love and Eros that is, why we would rather be in love even for a short period than to be in bed and nothing else.
In this universe, however, we are stuck with the pathetic, overly simplistic ‘vision’ of yet another high concept that Hollywood is all while men being overly tired by the relentless and predictable female faux authentic. This 40 Days believes that it finds women’s bodies first, then their brains, though it is just about hatemongering. This 40 Days is fake. It is essentially a lousy, tawdry film which, by some magic, imagines that it transcends of lousy and tawdry.
I do not understand the appeal of Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor, O), but judging by how frequently he’s been on the screen in the past year, I must be in the minority. Certainly his Matt Sullivan, a San Francisco dot com, has no shortage of female fans. Being women, they almost lynch him, even if he is disaffected and doesn seem particularly keen on acting like a male, apparently because is not in his vocabulary. See, he was recently jilted by a girlfriend, Nicole, without whom he appears to be able to do nothing, and the different girl which makes her way to his bed every night is, at best, an annoyance for him.
For the longest time, Nicole has been like a ghost who doesn’t exist until his character starts pining, and because of that, we are almost inclined to think that 40 Days is about a guy who goes out looking for sex only to realize he doesn’t want meaningless or commitment-less sex. Now that perhaps would suffice as a humorous perspective, considering that every person “understands” how men are laughs, poor man: wants to enjoy without falling in love.
And yep, screenwriter Rob Perez doesn’t fail in his thickness, writing that Matt chooses to make any sexual anything for forty days and forty nights to cleanse himself of Nicole. What more absurdity can people look forward to then: this is even worse: the poor man is such a sissy that he doesn’t even have the guts to wipe off and he is out to wreck the horror.
As we finally encounter Nicole (Vinessa Shaw: Eyes Wide Shut), one of our major characters, we learn that she is a pretty terrible bitch whose main skill seems to be managing to lead men around by their cocks. And then it all starts to make a sad pathetic kind of sense: Matt is not on a break from a relationship, parted with someone for an indefinite period getting a chance to refocus and regroup his energies.
He is avenging women who have built their lives capitalizing on sex it is now his turn to seem to be in the driving seat. Poor chap: he is clearly outnumbered by women, women who work in his office wearing leather, thigh-high 5 inch spiked fuck me boots and fishnet stockings. Who goes to work like that, I ask you, except for prostitutes? All the women, in Matt’s world, that’s who.
However, five seconds after taking his vow for celibacy, he has Erica in his sights (Shannyn Sossamon: A Knight’s Tale). For Matt, she is as uninteresting as him empty headed, empty hearted, no interests, apart from boasting how successful one is, what do they talk about? yet says it is possible to “build a friendship with her and it without all the shit that sex brings to the picture!”.
What unfounded nonsense, Of course, the sex stuff is still there, now, however, Matt is the one responsible for it. He gets to call the shots when it comes to who gets to satisfy the girl and who does not get to. You do not see this treating with a girl Billy’s perpetual love for Erica bodes well, but in such kind of motion pictures, the focus is getting laid for the first time, not after one year of couples love.
Such people boast about their sex lives and nothing else, such people are dull and not fascinating. Such people are a let down to such movies. Such movies are boring too, they boast about people’s sex lives and nothing else. Only kids play games where they trump sex over anything else. This is sad, people have such potential, and they go waste it in such rubbish, 40 Days and 40 Nights is nothing but one of those movies.
